Nobu New York has been a top Manhattan restaurant since it opened in 1994. Reservations are still hard to get. The main attraction is the food. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's menu is innovative and unique. Specialties like Black Cod with Miso and Lobster with Wasabi Pepper Sauce have earned Nobu a devoted following and rave reviews. Nobu earned three stars from the New York Times and was voted Top Japanese Cuisine in the 2004 NYC Zagat Survey.

And to add a little celebrity cahet, Nobu is owned by actor Robert DeNiro, NYC restaurant kingpin Drew Nieporent, and their partners.

Eating at Nobu is an experience. The decor is inspired by the Japanese countryside -- with natural textures, birch trees and a stone wall. Every dish I sampled was fantastic -- with the black cod in miso the definite stand-out.

The Grand Central outpost of the international empire is Cipriani for the masses, and they're there, mostly chugging Bellinis and snacking on breadsticks at the bar, or devouring rich, hearty pastas and signature dishes like beef carpaccio with Cipriani sauce. You wouldn't expect it, but this Venetian kitchen turns out a terrific club sandwich, an unusual open-faced burger, a retro but tasty chicken curry, and some of the best bar snacks around.
