THE PINK PANTHER
(2005)
Director: Shawn Levy
SOUNDTRACK: Avaliable Here

Rating PG
Run Time: 92 minutes
DVD Release Date: June 13, 2006

Synopsis:
If anyone could step into the huge shoes of comedic genius left by Peter Sellers as bumbling French policeman Jacques Clouseau, it's Steve Martin. Sellers made Clouseau a true icon of character and comedy in five Pink Panther movies in the '60s and '70s; Martin has arguably already attained Sellers' rank as an entertainment talent, so it only makes sense that he became Clouseau's heir apparent for the inevitable screen resurrection. This updated story of the priceless eponymous diamond purloined under mysterious circumstance and pursued with Keystone Cop-like antics by Clouseau is a frivolous yet winning pastiche of physical gags and riffs on Clouseau's hilariously impenetrable accent. A famous French football coach (Jason Statham in cameo mode) is wearing the stone, set as an engagement ring for his pop star fiance (Beyonce Knowles). But before a packed stadium crowd of thousands, the ring disappears from his finger as he falls dead from a poisoned dart. The wisp of a plot is secondary to the pratfalls of Martin's prim, prissy, and utterly inept Clouseau. He's brought onto the case by France's top cop (a drolly sophisticated Kevin Kline) who wants Clouseau to fail in a scheme to make himself a national hero. Even in a world where jokes about Viagra, flatulence and other familiar sophomoric subjects are required, Martin makes his Clouseau singularly memorable. You'll be fully expecting Clouseau to shatter priceless antiques, mangle his pronunciations (hamburger, anyone?), and prevail in the end, but Martin carries it off, giving homage to Sellers at the same time that he remakes the character in his own image as a comic master.

Synopsis:
Though officially disbanded, Destiny's Child proves in this concert video why they're one of the most successful soul/R&B groups of all time. Filmed at Atlanta's Phillips Arena during their Destiny Fulfilled farewell tour, the trio pulled all the stops--short of flying over the audience--to put on a spectacular show for their fans. Opening the show with their Grammy-winning "Say My Name," the group--who famously sang while running around a track as girls to build their lung strength--belted their harmonies and runs while dancing through a medley of hits including "No, No, No," "Bugaboo," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Bootylicious" and "Jumpin' Jumpin.'" The concert not only featured their greatest hits, but jammed in singles from their final album, Destiny Fulfilled. The girls sang the slinky "Cater 2 U" while giving lap dances to three lucky male audience members, while "Soldier" (with choreography that emulated Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation") included guest-star rappers T.I. and Lil' Wayne. The group closed with their anthem "Survivor," and the peppy "Lose My Breath" which featured a waterfall onstage that doused the singers.

Synopsis:
Destiny Fulfilled reunites the wayward solo members of R'n'B trio Destiny's Child, bringing Knowles, Rowland and Williams back together for another long overdue outing as the hyper-successful female group. While the R'n'B scene seems to have stagnated since they solo-ed out, the girls themselves were plenty busy, no more so than the ubiquitous global brand that is now Beyonce, now famously more dangerously in love with herself than anything else. This reunion can't have been easy, but things get off to a more than promising start with the harsh and immediate "Lose My Breath", which comes across as a battle cry to their contemporaries (watch out, Christina Milian) and a rousing call to arms to their legions of fans, which is continued by 'Soldier."

However, the album takes a different path at this point, opting for a sweeter contemporary sound that mimics their current peers. The vocals on these smoother, more sedate numbers stagger – aided by clean production, the harmonies interact with each other in a way that demonstrates the blissful chemistry between the girls, transcending all egos. The only letdown is "Cater 2 U", in which the girls muse about all the things they will do to please their men and continue to slush about the virtues of wearing his T-shirt in bed ("T-Shirt"). Are these really the same independent women that brought feminism to twelve year olds? Still, it seems they're growing up and calming down – which might be a good thing for the men of the world.

Synopsis:
Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD.

AUSTIN POWERS: GOLDMEMBER (2002)
DIRECTOR: Jay Roach
SOUNDTRACK: Avaliable Here

Rating PG-13
Run Time: 95 minutes
DVD Release Date: December 3, 2002

Synopsis:
Despite symptoms of sequelitis, Austin Powers in Goldmember is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo.

6. Jumpin', Jumpin' (So So Def Remix)

Synopsis:
With their sleek, cyber R&B sounds and lyrical/video world of cars, money, shopping, boys, and sex, Texas's Destiny's Child have hardly broken any new ground. However, The Platinum's on the Wall captures them at their career height and proves no one is doing this stuff with more grandeur, sass, and ice-cool efficiency. To paraphrase one commentator in 2001: This is Destiny's Child's world, the rest of us are just living in it. Beginning with their first, 1997 hit, the slow-burning, teasing "No, No, No (Part 1)" and including the foxy trot of "Bills, Bills, Bills" (an attack on backsliding homeboys as withering as TLC's "No Scrubs"), these videos, which feature costume changes on an almost frame-by-frame basis, are certainly lavish. The group, however, is seen to best advantage on the likes of "Say My Name," in which Beyonce Knowles, the group's leader and true star, gets to show off her persona a little. Disappointingly, the extra "biography" feature here is not a steamy account of their rapid rise and frequent personnel changes but a dreary, text-only account of their numerous TV appearances and platinum sales figures.
